Speaker: Joanie Montieth, Bangor Savings Bank

Joanie Monteith

“Thriving and Surviving for Women in Business”

Joanie will explore the following questions, as well as questions from participants:
·      How can I help my business adapt to this “new normal?”
·      Do I need a business plan to be successful?
·      What can I expect from my bank when I need a small business loan?
·      How can we protect ourselves in a market that is so unstable?
·      How fluid should we remain financially?
·      What payment systems do you recommend for solo entrepreneurs? (e.g., Paypal, Venmo, Wave, Square)

As a former social worker, small business owner, and banker, Joanie Monteith is highly qualified to speak to us about tonight’s topic, “Thriving and Surviving for Women in Business.” For the past five years, Joanie has been the Assistant Vice President and Branch Manager of the Bangor Savings Bank in Ogunquit, Maine, where she helps businesses and consumers achieve their financial goals by providing the right banking solutions to meet their needs. Besides overseeing sales growth and operations, she provides coaching, support and career development for her staff while promoting a customer-centered culture.

Prior to that, she managed a branch of another bank in Kennebunk, Maine for seven years. She created and maintained relationships with local businesses to help solve current business and personal banking needs and brought an underperforming branch to the top in that region.

While her children were small, Joanie owned her own home-based jewelry company, Goody Gem Drops. She designed and marketed several different lines of jewelry which she sold to local retailers and online too. She developed and followed a business plan which helped her grow her customer base and increase the profitability of her company.  She feels that parenting and being an entrepreneur are awesome learning experiences!

Her first career was in social work, specifically in child protective work and home-based family counseling. Her social work skills along with her experiences as a small business owner have helped her in solving the financial problems of her banking customers and supporting her staff members.

Joanie volunteers for many organizations in her community. For the past seven years, she has been a Facilitator for the United Way of York County, Maine. She was elected President and is an honorary board member of the York Ecumenical Advocates, locating state and town services for families in need. She was on the Executive Board of Go Red for the American Heart Association and is the Vice Chairman of the Ogunquit Chamber of Commerce. She loves living in York with her husband and two children, who now attend college at the University of Maine in Farmington and the University of Southern Maine.
